Ukulhas

Ukulhas, a local island in the Maldives and just about 70km away from the international airport and Capital Male’. It is one of the best islands in terms of natural beauty and the level of service among the Northern Ari Atoll islands. The island opened its doors for tourism in 2012 for the very first time.

Ukulhas looks like a pearl, surrounded by clear lagoons and coral reefs. It stretches for about 0.25 square kilometers (1025 meters long, 225 meters wide) and is home to about 1,000 locals. The eastern part of the island exudes a snow-capped beach, surrounded by one of the most beautiful lagoons in the atoll, washed by turquoise water.

Like other parts of the Maldives, Ukulhas has a tropical climate with warm weather all year round. December to April is usually the dry season and the peak tourist season. The hottest month is usually April and the coldest month is December, although in reality the difference between months is only a few degrees. Even the rainy season can be quite sporadic, and severe storms are very rare.

Fishing is one of the main daily activities of the locals. Fishing enthusiasts love Ukulhas because it is a good place to catch tuna and blue marlin.

Like most Maldivians, the locals are very friendly and peaceful, and they are happy to tell the stories of daily life and even teach traditional handicrafts to tourists. The coral reef is located near the island, where you will often see turtles, giant mantas, rays, reef sharks and zebra sharks (not harmful to humans) and all other rainbow-colored fish. The reefs of the island are ideal for snorkeling, diving and water sports.

In addition to many guesthouses, there are also a health care center, pharmacies, small magazines and Cafés on the island. There is a Bikini beach on the island, meaning a beach where you can wear a bikini and get the precious Maldivian tan.

Ukulhas is known for its clean and well-maintained waste management system, and is also known as the first island in the history of the Republic of Maldives to systematically conduct waste management. Ukulhas implements several cleaning and planting programs every year, and organizes several awareness programs on waste management, marine ecosystems and biodiversity. Ukulhas is recognized as the environmental role model island of the Republic of Maldives and won the “Green Leaf Award” in 2014 for its outstanding service in protecting and maintaining the island’s environment.
